Fabric Cable Finish Guide: Rayon vs. Cotton vs. Linen
A frequent question from lighting designers and DIY makers is how to select the right fabric finish for their project. The ideal choice depends on your target interior aesthetic:
- Rayon Sheath (Glossy & Vibrant): Features a smooth, lustrous finish with high color brilliance. Rayon pairs exceptionally well with polished metals, chrome fixtures, satin trims, and modern colorful accent pieces.
- Cotton Sheath (Matte & Soft): Delivers a clean, matte appearance with a subtle, soft-touch natural finish. Excellent for contemporary Scandinavian, minimalist, or everyday residential interiors.
- Linen Sheath (Organic & Textured): Offers a raw, natural, matte texture. Linen seamlessly complements vintage-style lighting, exposed timber, antique brass, copper, raw iron, and porcelain components.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between 2-core and 3-core cable?
2-core cable contains Active and Neutral conductors, designed for light fittings that do not require grounding. 3-core cable includes an Earth wire and must be used for metal light fittings. When in doubt 3core will cover all options. Please see this guide.
Can I shorten or adjust the length of my pendant cable?
Yes. There are numerous ways to do this. You can adjust the cable length before installation, your electrician can easily cut cable with scissors. Ceilng rose clamps can be loosened to allow the cable to be pulled through. Cable can be cut and rewired by your electrician at the lamp holder. See this guide for more information.
Can I order fabric cable samples before purchasing?
Yes. We provide cable sample swatches so you can match fabric colours, textures, and sheaths (Rayon, Cotton, Linen, Jute) directly against your wall paint, cabinetry or metal fixture finishes.
Tips for ordering custom cable lengths
All fabric cable is sold by the meter and supplied as one continuous uncut length (up to 50 meters per roll). We recommend ordering 10mm extra cable to account for wiring connections inside ceiling roses and lamp holders.
What is the maximum weight a fabric cable can support?
Standard 0.75mm² double-insulated fabric flex safely supports pendant shades up to 2.25 kg directly by the cord. For heavier glass, solid brass, or concrete shades, a strain relief clamp or dedicated support wire or chain should be used. Please consult with your installer and see this guide for more information.
How do I safely hang a light shade from fabric cord?
Light shades are usually secured using shade-ring lamp holders (E27 or E14). Ensure the cable is fitted with an internal strain relief cable clamp inside the ceiling rose and lamp holder to prevent physical tension on the electrical terminals. There are however other options available, please see this guide regarding hanging your shade.
What is the outer thickness of the fabric cable?
The total outer diameter including the decorative textile braid is approximately 6.2 mm for 2-core cable (2x0.75 mm²) and 6.6 mm for 3-core cable (3x0.75 mm²). There is variation depending on the fabric covering material. See this guide.
