Also called naked bulb lighting or exposed bulb lighting these pendants are free from shades and have a bare bulb only on the end.
Where do I use bare bulb pendant lighting?
Bare bulb lighting is used in a few instances. One is when the light bulb is the feature. With such beautiful LED light bulbs available sometimes the light bulb instead of shade wants to be the star! Many large industrial or restaurant spaces use bare bulb lighting to avoid filling the overhead space with ‘visual heaviness’. This is a practical way to light a space without the lighting overpowering the design element. Bare bulb lighting is also used for pendants that will be creating atmospheric lighting instead of functional lighting as they can use a beautifully dimmed LED bulb.
How do I design a bare bulb pendant light?
1 - Ceiling Rose or Plug. Firstly if you will be hardwiring the pendant light then choose a ceiling rose. This is the decorative plate that goes on the ceiling. Plugs can be used instead of hard wiring if you would like to easily move the light in the future.
2 - Fabric Cable. Pick your favourite fabric cable! Not often an easy choice because we have so many to choose from.
3 - Lamp holder. The lamp holder is what holds the bulb. This can be a beautiful feature piece but choosing vintage finished, bright colours or simple natural tones. Make sure that the lamp holder has the fitting that will match your light bulb.
4 - Light bulb. Bare bulb pendant lights deserve beautiful bulbs. Choose from coloured glass, interesting filaments or unusual shapes. Please ensure that it is a dimmable bulb if you will be using a dimmer. Also ensure that the fitting will match your lamp holder. Fittings to choose from are E27, E14, E40 and B22.
How can I customize my extra large ceiling rose?
Like all ceiling roses you can customise with size, shape, finish and colour. There are circular and rectangular, metal finishes and the classic black and white. Also choose different cable clamps: conical, cylindrical or receding to customise your look.
