read moreA lampshade also known as lamp shade, light cover, lightshade, shade or light shade are a cover for your light source which softens and diffuses the light or directs the light into a different direction. The lampshade itself is a fixture which is added to your lamp. Its name is probably is derived from the idea that it ‘shades’ the eyes from the light itself, eliminating the harsh glare or direct brightness. Generally, it is used as a design feature for aesthetic pleasure. Some are lined with a material that doesn’t allow the light to penetrate the lampshade material. Instead the light is thrown upwards and downwards for a more dramatic effect. This is helpful if you want to control the direction of the light. If the shade is not backed the material shade can illuminate creating a soft diffusion of light or stylist feature though the material itself. Naked shades or skeleton shades cast light in all directions and are without a cover and instead are just a frame. This is ideal when you want to maximize the amount of light in your space. However sometimes this doesn’t work especially when at a work bench where you need directional light or just don’t need to be blinded by the lightbulb! Lampshades can come in many different materials. Metal light shades can create an industrial vintage look ideal for warehouse spaces or cafes with a rustic charm. Alternatively use the practicalities and durability of a metal shade in a modern colour to create a unique look to suit your style ... Here at Creative Cables Australia & New Zealand we also stock dome shaped lampshades in a polyester fiber. The micro fibers create a soft glow from the shade creating a gentler light source. These are ideal in pendants and have a lovely handmade quality about them. Often the irregular nature of the course raw materials can create a texture that looks wonderful lit from within. Ceramicists love using Creative Cables fabric cord to complement their artistic individual ceramic pieces. We stock many different shapes and sizes of ceramic shades in a range of colours. Within this range you can also have lampshades made from ceramic for a very industrial outdoor look. With the advancements in technology materials such as silicone can be made to create lampshades. With the addition of a diffuser this creates a luminescence quality through the silicone colour. This is ideal for feature lighting. Shades don’t just have to be practical they can be decorative. Did you know you can use naked shades? It sounds crazy but using the frame of the shade shape you can create the allure of a shade without diffusing any of the light and still having your lightbulb able to be seen. This is great in small spaces where you don’t want to clutter the ceiling space or when using decorative light globes that you want to show off. The most famous of these are the cage shades. In diamond and bulb shapes and inspired from the industrial miner’s cage lights, these metal shades have become very popular. Mix and match the metal colours with your fabric cable to create a unique style. The most classic of all shades are the fabric shades. Made from raw cotton, canvas or linen this is stretched over a metal frame shape. There are always a few things to consider when choosing your shade. Choosing a lamp shade, you need to consider style and shape and light source which is the function. Would you like your light to be diffused? In the case of over bars, kitchen benches or bedrooms you may want a light source that is softer and not glaring to the eye. Choose a shade that is covered and consider the material that is used. Fabric will let some light through whereas metal will allow light to shoot over and under the shade itself. Is the shade for a table lamp, standing lamp or pendant? Consider the size in which will work with your base or cord length. Have a look at your space and decide what would look best to the eye without over powering the space. Too small and it could look unusual and stylistically awkward. What is the style of the space you want to light up? Industrial, classic, modern, period or natural are all styles which designers use to create an atmosphere. Consider the shape and material of your lampshade that will work with your chosen look. Metal, concrete and naked shades are fantastic for the industrial warehouse looks. Modern interiors may require architecturally shaped feature pieces and eclectic funky spaces in cafes and restaurants could use modern colorful materials such as silicone. Will you use an existing lightbulb? Light globes need to fit within the shades interior space. Lovely extra-large bulbs are not going to be safe if touching the side of your light shade. Smaller E14 sized bulbs may not illuminate a shades space adequately. Attaching shades to your lights is easy here at Creative Cables Australia & New Zealand. With a large range of lampholders with double ferrules you can get the right light fitting for your shade. The lamp holder is the piece that holds your bulb and with the use of clamping rings called ferrules you can also attach your shade to the lamp holder. Choose from bakelite, vintage metal and thermoplastic to create your unique look. Add shades to batten lampholders, wall light sockets, table lamps, pendant lights including multiple spider chandeliers, floor lights and feature lighting projects. Above all have fun with your lighting choices! Shades can be removed if you change your mind or style later. Mix and match your lightshades with complimentary or contrasting fabric cable. The choices are endless and then only thing inhibiting your design choice is your imagination!
