Pendant lighting is hugely popular within homes, cafes, restaurants and work spaces. But not everyone can have lighting hardwired. This may come down to a few factors. Hard wiring can be an added expense that hasn’t been budgeted for. Perhaps the space is rented and hard wiring isn’t a possibility because of your contract. Or you may need more flexibility with your lighting and have the ability to move your lighting around. Either way this does not mean you can’t enjoy custom made lighting or even have to settle for something boring.
How do I design my plug in pendant light?
When you design your own plug-in pendant light these are the things to consider. The lamp holder is the electrical fitting that holds the light bulb. Would you like your pendant to hold a lamp shade? If so a lamp holder with a lamp shade ring needs to be selected. In addition to this do you want the pendant light to be turned off and on at the lamp holder? Built in switches, dials and pull switches can be chosen at this point. This is ideal for pendant lights that will be used next to bed sides and need an easy reach power control. There are some situations where the power source plug is in an awkward position like behind furniture or very low to the ground this is where having a switch at the point of the lamp holder can be vert handy. Secondary how long do you want your pedant light to be? We sell fabric cable by the metre so adding an extra metre for ‘just in case’ is a low cost way of avoiding the cord being too short. Consider if you will be moving the pendant in the future too. As a rule a lot of our plug in pendant lights are 3m in length. If however you will be looping or hanging your pendant off a ceiling or wall plug you with need more length. We recommend using a piece of string as a guide to give you a better idea. Thirdly does your pendant light need a dimmer or switch? These can be added to create atmosphere and mood in areas like reading rooms and bedrooms. These electrical components can be placed at a convenient distance for you to reach. Some dimmer have built in on off switches and if you choose a dimmer remember to choose a dimmable light bulb! There is also the possibility of adding a floor switch. These small round button switches allow for a pendant light to be turned off with the press of the foot. Choosing a three pin plug for Australian standards is relatively simple all you need to is pick the colour you like! And of course there is the light bulb. Choose between carbon filament or energy saving LED bulbs. Various shapes, sizes and decorative filaments are also available within our wide selection.
A plug-in pendant light can be trailed along the floor or table top. It would come as no surprize that we call these snake lights! The alternative is using your plug-in pendant light off a wall hook. They are plugged into the floor power point, trailed up the wall and looped over a wall hook to then hang at the desired height. We have a range of wall hooks that may suit your needs. Our simple decentralizers are mainly used to move ceiling hung pendants into different locations from the hard wire point especially in the use of chandelier multi- armed pendant creations. These decentralisers however can be used on walls as subtle discreet hooks to hang pendants. If you have chosen a large bulb like a G125 globe, then the pendant will need to hang further off the wall. The Pinocchio wall hook is adjustable to different heights and is woven through the wall mount. This allows for a faster adjustment especially when using wider lampshades. The Archet(To) is a Creative Cables patented wall mount. Resembling an arch it makes it easy to hang on any wall at a soft shaped angle. However, you don’t always need to purchase a wall hook. Looping around bookshelf supports, bed posts and ceiling beams are also all possibilities.
